Research
Introduction

Combined, we have 100 years of research experience studying the biology
of (micro)algae. Our current research involves large-scale algal
genomics in collaboration with BGI Research (Wuhan, China) in the 10 KP
(10,000 plant genome) project with emphasis on evolution of genome
complexity and horizontal gene transfer. We host a research collection
of ~2,000 strains of living microalgae (the MEL-collection) at the MPIPZ
and have stimulated the formation or expansion of microalgal culture
collections worldwide (Germany, Italy, Spain, Armenia, Vietnam, China)
by establishing ~12,000 algal strains. We also participate in
collaborative research projects in Germany, China, Vietnam, Spain, and
the U.S.

Words of Wisdom

" Judging scientists by the size of their portfolio is equivalent to judging art by how much money was spent on paint and brushes, rather than the quality of the paintings."
